Just Some of the Many Players and Personalities that I Admired

The following lists, in alphabetical order, show just a few of the many players and personalities I have admired during my football days. The lists are far from finished and I apologise for names not yet added. Please contact me about anyone, I've included or omitted, you have an opinion on.

If anyone feels I have got some information wrong with my comments please let me know. After all the time that has elapsed and the number of teams and players I have been involved with it's more than likely that I may have my wires crossed occasionally.

An obvious one could be in thinking a player was left footed when in fact he was right footed. An example of this was an incident that actually happened when I played for Ryhope CA.

I was playing in one game and a right wing cross came to me on the edge of the penalty area and I hit a first time shot with my left foot and it was a good strike but it rebounded from the right hand post. I didn't think much more about it but when I got back into the dressing room our Trainer Ernie Carlin was giving me some advice, in a nice way I might add, and the conversation went something like this :-

Ernie - 'Joe you'll have to try and use your right foot a bit more'

Joe   - 'what do you mean'

Ernie - 'that shot of yours that hit the post'

Joe   - 'what about it'

Ernie - 'if you are running on to a cross from the right you've got to hit the ball with your right foot'

Joe   - 'I normally would but it fell nicely for my left'

Ernie - 'thats because you adjusted yourself so you could hit it with your left'

Joe   - 'why would I do that?'

Ernie - 'because you are left footed'

Joe   - 'I'm not, I'm right footed'

Ernie - 'you're not, you're left footed'

In the mids't of my laughter I tried to explain that I obviously could use both feet but I really was right footed but he wouldn't have it.

Even to this day I'm not sure if he still thinks that way. (He'd probably tell me that I cannot kick with any now and I would certainly have to agree with him on that)

When I think of it now it was a huge compliment although it was never meant that way.
